Themes in Othello that are still relevant today
Revenge is the largest theme in Othello. Everything happens because of it. Iago destroys Othello and Cassio because he wants revenge. Othello wants revenge because he thinks that Desdemona and Cassio are having an affair. In the beginning of the play, Iago tries to destroy Othello because there was a promotion and he made Cassio hiss lieutenant, instead of Iago. Iago wants to get revenge by telling Barbantio, Othello;s wife's father that Othello secretly married his daughter. Iago also tries to get Cassio getting his friend, Rodrigo, to pick a fight with Cassio when he is drunk. Iago tries to drive Othello insane be convincing him that his wife, Desdemona, is having an affair with Cassio.
Betrayal is a significant theme in Othello and it is still relevant in everyday life. Iago betrays Othello by lying to him and convincing him that Desdemona and Cassio are having an affair. Iago also pretends to be a honest man when he is actually evil.
There was a lot of discrimination in Othello. For example, Iago insults his wife, Emilia, and calls her a whore. Iago is also racist towards Othello and calls him things like “the black devil”
